The Statesboro Revue JUKEHOUSE REVIVAL

Blue Rose Records

Southern country rock with a 21stcentury twist

JUKEHOUSE REVIVAL is their third album since 2009 and brothers Stewart and Garrett Mann have honed the skills of The Statesboro Revue to perfection. Stewart has a melodic Southern country soul vocal, matched by his younger brother’s lead guitar skills. Add in the experienced bass of Ben Bradshaw and the percussive panache of Kris Schoen and you have the framework for a polished set of contemporary songs. The production by David Z, who worked wth Storyville, BoDeans and Jonny Lang, picks up threads from legends Little Feat and The Allman Brothers.

The opener Bedroom Floor has a bluesy feel with pedal steel and lead guitar feeding into the lyric as the singer narrates a cautionary tale where, however he starts, he ‘always ends up down on the bedroom floor’. Another blues-soaked track is the relaxed Roll On Mama, sounding like The Band circa 1967 Guest keyboardist Travis Bishop provides depth with background bar room piano. Count On Me is the strongest song. A mid-paced song of love and reassurance, it has a delicious harmonyladen chorus as the lyrics confidently advise ‘You can’t always count on the weather but with troubles at your doorstep, you can count on me.’ The following acoustic guitar break has a summery feel, adding to our sense of returning to The Eagles or The Lovin’ Spoonful.

Tallahassee is faster, with its driving theme, has a great backbeat and a good alliterative lyric ‘Talla-Tallahasse, why you’re hassling me? I’m just trying to get home/ Lord, it’s plain to see.’ Go Down Slow drips with country soulfulness and Last Ramble moves into Celtic territorywith the augmentation of banjo and accordion into the instrumental line-up.

JUKEHOUSE REVIVAL is a glorious tribute to the country rock era with sweet guitar sounds, solid bass riffs and driving drums, topped off by Stewart Mann’s outstanding melodic vocals. It is not only a nostalgia-driven outing though. The album has a relevance and crispness that would grace any 21st century jukehouse. Sim on Beards
