I checked Nathan Pritikin out with another friend, the gerontologist-biochemist Johan Bjorksten, whose name I noted was on Pritikm’s advisory board. Bjorksten felt that the ultimate rejuvenation-life-extension treatment would be some biochemical agent that would reverse the bonds of molecular cross-linkage that wreak havoc with our cellular and organic functioning as we age. In the meantime, though, nutrition and exercise that could suppress formation of those cross-linkages would be extremely important, he felt. He himself, he said, abided by a Pritikin style of living. And he suggested that such a life-style could mean anywhere from twenty to thirty extra years of good living for me.
I enrolled in the four-week program. Within four days, I began to feel exuberant. I definitely didn’t want to lose that feeling, so I behaved myself. I even (with occasional brief lapses) gave up cigars and coffee difficult habits to overcome since for years I had needed them at my side in order to write.
