THE BEST HAIRCUTS AND COLORS FOR RIGHT NOW

Hair needn’t be short to have real style. Given the right cut, long hair can look very modem. The most current options are lightly layered and low maintenance. “We’re cutting long layers near the face to give the hair more movement not height or width.” says Andrea Davis, stylist at Van Michael Salon in Atlanta. The thinner your hair, the fewer layers you need. “The biggest lallacy is that layers make thin hair look thicker,” says Arnold Zegarelli, director at Lazarus Salons in Pittsburgh and consultant for Premier Salons International. “If you add too many layers to fine hair, it looks string}-.” Exactly where the layers should fall depends on your face shape. “Generally, you want layers near the features you want to play up,” says Jamie Mazzei, artistic director of Nubest & Co. in Manhasset, New York.

When it comes to coloring long hair, highlights are the best option. “They don’t coat all of the hair or require constant touch-ups.” says Davis. “Permanent all-over lightening can be too drying and too much trouble to maintain.” Those who want an all-over change should opt for semipermanent shades (like Sebastian ColourShines or Redken Shades EQ Color Gloss both in-salon sendees), which fade gradually and don’t require constant touch-ups. Anyone with very long hair should avoid permanent red shades. Says Davis, “They fade very quickly, and the longer your hair, the more uneven the color will become.”
