Sundae Shawl

This shawl, knitted from the inside to the outside edge, looks just like a butterfly’s wings. Variegated yarn and a simple lace pattern add to the gossamer effect.

Pattern Notes Shawl is knitted from the neck down as a central back panel with a triangle on each edge. Triangles are shaped by increasing at each edge on right-side rows; back panel is shaped at edges every 6th wrong-side row on pattern repeats 24 only. Eight markers are used to keep the sections divided. Slip first stitch of every row purlwise with yarn in front, then take yarn to back between needle tips. When adding the 2nd ball of yarn, unwind if necessary to start at the same point in the color sequence. Work join at beginning of row by knitting 2nd stitch with both strands. Weave in ends at edge after blocking. Shawl must be blocked firmly for lace pattern to show. Dampen it, and then pin it out on a bedspread or clean carpet, stretching as much as possible. Blocking wires and a blocking board are helpful. Shawl Loosely cast on 35 sts Neck Edge Rows 16: Sl 1, knit to last st, k1-tbl.
