PROTECT YOURSELF

If you want to ensure that your hair and body look healthy, protecting them should be a top priority. You only need to compare the skin on your stomach, which is aged by time, with the skin on your hands – aged by the sun – to see how 90 per cent of lines and wrinkles are caused by UV rays. To help prevent premature ageing and burning, use a sunscreen of at least SPF15. The fairer your skin, the higher the factor should be. And, don’t worry, contrary to popular belief, you will still get a tan.

Dermatologists recommend applying at least a tablespoon of sunscreen per limb and a teaspoon on the face about 20 minutes before going outside in the sun, giving the formula a chance to bind to the skin and start working.

According to trichologist Philip Kingsley: ‘Summer is a perilous time for hair, too. The sun’s rays lighten, blister, bleach, burn and frazzle it. Combined with chlorine, salt and heat, the results can be disastrous. I recommend wearing a hat or scarf,’ he says. Alternatively, try a protective cream, such as Kerastase Creme Aqua Resist, £14, or Philip Kingsley Swimcap, £16. ‘If you don’t want to spend much, mix waterproof, high-factor sunscreen with a conditioner and comb through,’ adds Kingsley. GO BRONZE

Ironically, when it comes to revealing your sun-deprived body, nothing hides top-to-toe imperfections like a tan, so apply a generous amount of bronzer before you go. Rodial Instant Glow SelfTan Gel, £28, and Clinique Radiant Bronze Tinted Self-Tanner for Face & Body, £13.50, are great home options. In the salon, Guinot Auto-Bronzant Treatment, from £32, includes a body polish; or, a speedy version, Fantasy Tan, from £25, is sprayed on in minutes by an expert. Hot London facialist Una Brennan (07952-168678) says, ‘Have a cleansing facial a few days before you apply self-tan, as it can colour dirt in the pores, making your skin look grubby, not glowing.’
