Strictly Come Dancing

The McFly drummer is married to fomer Escala violinist Izzy Johnston, and the couple are expecting their first child in January. He won Strictly Come Dancing in 2011 with Aliona Vilani. The musician, who is about to turn 30, is dancing the American smooth with Joanne Clifton to Baby It’s Cold Outside.

How does it feel to be back?

It’s more about dancing again.

Unless you go and do a West End show you don’t have a platform to dance on. I’m in a band but I love to dance, which is something I thought I’d never say.

Would you like to win?

You don’t think about winning – you just want to get through the dance. It’s not like being in a dance competition. It’s just doing Strictly and that’s the fun of it.

Have you watched the current series?

Yes, Izzy is in charge of the TV controls on Saturday and Sunday nights. So it’s Strictly followed by The X Factor The contestants in Strictly have been amazing. I just feel so glad I’m not on this year.

What do you think about Aliona and Jay’s chances of winning?

Very high. The minute I saw Jay dance I thought he was going to be right up there. I’m pleased she got a good partner.

Is Christmas a big thing in your family?

It is in my wife’s family. As soon as I started spending Christmas with her family I thought it was great. I joke and call my dad Scrooge!

What’s your family Christmas like then?

Last year it was just my brother and parents. My brother was ill, Mum went for a nap at 2pm and Dad was in his office. There were no decorations, it was miserable.

What are you doing this year?

Izzy is heavily pregnant so we’re taking it easy. My bandmate Tom [Fletcher] is obsessed with Christmas.

For his 21st birthday we had a Christmas meal with a tree and everything, bearing in mind his birthday is in July!

Are you getting excited about becoming a dad?

I’m getting impatient! It is so exciting – we can see it moving around. I can’t wait.

How do you feel about parenthood?

I’m just enjoying feeling naive about it all. I’m sure if we speak in a couple of months I might feel differently.

Are you going to take time off when the baby arrives?

I think so. We are very lucky. Tom’s wife is due to have their second child in February so let’s just take some time out and hope I can be a support.

Will you take the baby on tour?

I’m looking forward to that. With Matt [Willis, from McBusted] and his wife Emma, their kids come along. We are such a boring band so it’s nice to have babies around so we have something to talk about.

Are you just back to being McFly now?

Busted are off on tour.

We knew Matt and James [Bourne] had been talking to Charlie [Simpson]. We were just excited for them.

We want to get to a place where we’re ready to do an album. With distractions like babies, now isn’t the best time.

What tips can you give Jay if he makes the final?

All I can say is get through the first dance. I found that, once the first dance was out of the way and it went well, I completely relaxed.
