However, if you are in any doubt go to the salon for professional colour advice. It’s really not worth the headache or hair ache to have a bad home job!
The mystery of home colouring kits starts with the picture of the girl on the front of the box all glorious flowing hair and just the colour you want. I hate to shatter your illusions and expose the work of the clever people in marketing but the chances are the picture will have been computer enhanced. The hair may actually be a wig or the colour may have been applied to bleached hair to get that really vibrant colour.
Trust me, I’ve seen it happen. If you buy a box of honey blonde for instance, the chances of achieving the exact shade shown on the box are slim. Much depends on your natural hair colour. Home hair colour is complicated so be warned!
My advice would always be to consult your hairdresser on what your natural base colour is and what colour would suit you. You can only go darker or lighter a certain number of shades from your base colour.
So, cwhat is base colour? I hear you ask
Base colour is the natural hair shade you are born with, which may or may not lighten or darken as you get older. Reflect tone is the colour you see for example, you may have a base colour of light brown with a reddish or coppery reflect tone. It is the reflect tone that makes hair so individual. Natural redheads still have a natural base colour but the reflect tone is much stronger and more obvious.
Hair colourists use a standard base level system of ten shades. Base 1 is black (think Elvis) and base 10 is lightest blonde (Marilyn Monroe). Everything else falls between the two (see opposite).
The irony is of course Monroe was naturally much darker cincl Presley naturally much lighter. We always want what we haven’t got!
5 LIGHT BROWN (US LIGHT BROWN)
6 DARK BLONDE (US DARK BLONDE)
7 MEDIUM BLONDE (US BLONDE)
8 LIGHT BLONDE (US LIGHT BLONDE)
9 VERY LIGHT BLONDE (US VERY LIGHT BLONDE)
10 LIGHTEST BLONDE (US LIGHTEST BLONDE)
Fm often asked ‘what COlOlir will Suit me?’ and each answer is UNIQUE. Colour experts the world over suggest colour is calculated through a consultation that takes into account skin tone, eye colour and the season as well as lifestyle, personality, the make up Someone wears and how much time she is prepared to spend on it.
Phew! It’s a science all of its own. 1 often think it’s about how much someone wants to W Ilisper, talk or shout about their colour. For some women the phrase ‘it looks really natural? is just what they want to hear while others are quite happy to tell the world that
they’ve dyed and gone to heaven!
