GUNN THE PAST 12 MONTHS SAW LYNN’S LIFE THRUST INTO THE SPOTLIGHT. YET 2015’S BREAKOUT STAR IS ONLY STRONGER FOR IT…
LastJanuary Lynn Gunn started keeping a diary. Some entries are bullet points of what she does in the day, just to keep track (‘Ate food’,’Went to bed’),while others are more in-depth, describing adventures her band, PVRIS, have been on, And, if she’s feeling mad at the world, she’ll embark on scribble tirades, Other pages feature random sentiments like, ‘Get out of my head!’ or; ‘Today was the worst!’Then there’s the annotations…
“I’ll go back and read something again and write, ‘You’re stupid! Why say that?, or, ‘You’re okay shut up!'” says Lynn.
The chaos within those pages is a perfect .. representation of the vocalist’s 2015, Easily the biggest year of her life, it saw her band play their first UK shows, Slam Dunk, Reading & Leeds and take on support slots on all the best tours. “2015 was awesome, so we’re just excited to see what the hell happens this year.” Lynn smiles. ‘Who knows?”
Two things definitely happening are their first proper UK headline tour and a much-anticipated second album, material for which Lynn is working on. “It’s a lot more self-reflective” ’ she says of the tracks she’s written so far: ‘White Noise was angry and angsty towards something that wasn’t my own self, and this record is gonna be directed at me, instead of what was troubling me. It’s darker, lyrically, and harsher on myself.” Harsher how?
“I’ve been blaming myself for a lot of things; like, why things go wrong,” Lynn admits.
One lyrical inspiration will be the worries that come
with being in one of 2016’s hottest bands.’It’s like,’Can we keep up with this? Or is it gonna destroy us? Are we gonna go crazy?’
“I just want the album to hopefully.. ,”she adds, taking her voice down to a whisper, “make a lot of other people happy.”
Before White Noise, nobody expected an album fthat could make people happy. In fact, nobody “expected anything, because PVRIS were relative nobodies. But this time round, all eyes are on Lynn Gunn to deliver.
“I try not to get too stressed about it, but a lot of people are bringing it up lately, and I’m like, ‘Shit. should we be stressed out about this?’” Lynn reveals. ‘There was a bit of pressure [with White Noise], but when we got into the studio to work with Blake [Harnage, producer] he completely batted that out of our headsi He gave us confidence and encouraged us to do what makes us feel good, As long as we’re proud of it, that’s the number one thing.”
While Lynn’s confident about her band’s musical output, she continues to struggle with the baggage that comes with being a rockstar She’s still not fully comfortable onstage, and gets “anxious, kinda nervous and stressed” before she goes on.Then there’s her current internal debate about whether to step away from social media due to the“shitheads”outthere. And there’s the whole Kristen Stewart thing©
Tell Lynn she’s become a minor celebrity due to that rumour linking her to theTwilight star and she’ll laugh, before letting out an exasperated’Urghhhh’.
“It’s kind of died down now, but when we first found out about that, I was like,’This is a joke.. .’What I thought was funny was they were saying,’She looks just like her!’ and I was like,’I can see it in the hair and the facial shape but, like, noooo (laughs)’.’
Lynn might be out ofthe headlines for now, but if PVRIS get as big as it feels like they’re going to, her name will be right back up there in Franklin Gothic Condensed. And she seems surprisingly ready to become a household name.
“If you have good intentions, a good heart and you’re not a fucking asshole, it’s not that hard to deal with being in the public eye, so I think we’ll be just fine she smiles.
20l6,Lynn Gunn is coming for you.
