How has social media grown your brand? The internet and blogs – from Facebook to Instagram – have played a major role in my growth and putting my name out there. The internet really is great for brand exposure. I grew up in Durban, the first born child. I have two younger sisters and spent years practising my hairdressing skills on them. I went on to study quantity surveying at university and worked in the engineering field for a while. It wasn’t until I got married that I decided to be a hair stylist. I enrolled for a hairdressing course in Johannesburg. I also studied cosmetic science because I wanted to make my own hair products. After completing my diploma, I served on the education committee of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists of South Africa for nearly five years and have been a member for the past 10 years. After lots of studying and practical trial and error, I came up with my own brand of natural products because of my struggles with allergies and sensitivities. It was hard work, but I love treating hair with nature-based products like mine. Nativechild is born out of my struggles with my own hair and health. What has been the highlight of your career? There’ve been a number of highlights: getting my qualification was an achievement as studying chemistry was hard.
