Canada Ian Sherwood has been picking up an impressive collection of accolades over the past couple of years or so. His albums have received excellent reviews, he was named Contemporary Singer Of The Year by the Canadian Folk Music Awards, Best Male Artist Of The Year by the International Acoustic Music Awards and for two years was the Music Nova Scotia’s Musician Of The Year. In 2011 he received the nomination for Male Solo Artist Recording Of The Year from the ECMA.
In Britain however his is an unfamiliar name which, coupled with it being a cold and damp night, probably explains why there was such a poor showing for this gig-
Not that this seemed to faze the affable singer-songwriter and multiinstrumentalist who with admirable professionalism gave us a show that was probably little different from what he would produce for a packed house back home.
Opening with Me Or Your Money and What Am I Doing Here he quickly demonstrated just why he is so highly rated as a songwriter, with the ability to pen narrative songs that are literate, thoughtful and yet with a quirky wit.
He told us: ‘Sometimes I write absurd songs but sometimes I write songs that are more personal and these I find are the hardest to write.’ When he can write songs that are quite as good as the bittersweet Cape Town, Dear Everyone which he was commissioned to write for a play about a girl from a small town trying to make it in the city and Big Love which he wrote for his wife, you felt grateful that he stuck with the more personal.
