Exuberant folk from the award winning duo

Greg Russell & Ciaran Algar go from strength to strength and now have two BBC Radio 2 folk awards to their name. THE SILENT MAJORITY is released to coincide with an extensive spring tour and is a first class followup to their 2014 offering THE CALL.

This time Laurence Blackadder (double bass), Ali Levack (pipes, whistle), Tom Wright (percussion) and Hannah Martin (vocals) add an extra dimension to the regulation bouzouki and Greg’s guitar and Ciaran’s violin and banjo. The lads stick to a tried and trusted formula with a combination of original compositions, traditional songs and tracks sourced from contemporary writers.

A highlight for me was We Must Be Contented; a response to the Representation of the People Act of 1832 which was intended to make life easier for working people but in reality made little difference; a simple arrangement with a great violin break. The title track, by Lionel McClelland, focuses on atrocities and tragedies as ‘the silent majority stayed silent’. Pete Coe’s catchy sing-a-long number Rolling Down The Ryburn is a fitting finale and has a special relevance to the duo as they cover vast distances doing more and more gigs; traditional folk at its best.
