It’s easy to forget that today’s communications and entertainment media are relatively young inventions. “In the fifties, we had three television networks, several movie studios, and only a handful of national magazines,” says Rodney Runyan, Ph.D., associate professor and chairman of the fashion marketing and merchandising program at Northwood University in Midland, Michigan. “In the past twenty years, we’ve added dozens of television networks, dozens of independent movie studios, thousands of movie screens, dozens of national magazines, and now the Internet. Technology has increased the frequency and level of exposure to fashion, as well as compressed the time period from inception to exposure.” The result: we’re absolutely saturated with fashion information. “Attention spans for trends are about five minutes long at this point,” says Elizabeth Kiester, fashion director of YM magazine and former market director at Jane. “I try to explain to our nineteen-year-old interns that when I started in this business it was before the explosion of cable TV, before Marie Claire and Jane and Lucky and Nylon and Detour and Flaunt and In Style, before Bazaar got young and hip, before the Internet and Style.com and satellite TV shows and MTV and Fashion File. We are so inundated with information now.” Consumers are bombarded with images nearly everywhere they look. “You’ve seen every trend a billion times before it’s even at your local Macy’s,” says Kiester. “The celebs are wearing next season’s stuff on this season’s red carpet, and those pics are in People, In Style, Us and on every network. Ugh, you want to puke, you can’t look at camouflage for one more second, and it’s not even at the Gap yet. And then the design houses are trying to keep up, pumping this stuff out, clamoring for the trend, and it’s at Old Navy and Barney’s at the exact same time. So fashionistas and people on a budget can both have cropped camo pants simultaneously, and the next thing you know is that everyone walking down the street looks exactly the same.
