In addition to programs devoted entirely to fashion, makeover madness began to saturate talk shows and other general-interest programs in the 1990s. Viewers clamored to see “Geek to Chic” and “Help! My mother dresses like a hoochie” transformations. Everyone wanted to see the plus-sizer learn to dress for her figure, the burly truck driver fixed up to look like an accountant, the teenage goth transformed into a clean-cut Ivy League student. Makeover segments played out as the ultimate Cinderella fantasy (whether the subjects were willing participants or not). The message: You can change your life by changing your clothes. “Women, especially, have a fascination with transformation as a [means] of revenge on those who thought they weren’t pretty or special enough,” says Joyce Millman, TV editor for Salon.com. “There’s a new element to the makeovers you see on Oprah, Ricki Lake, The View, and other shows the makeover is not presented as merely a cosmetic change, but a spiritual transformation, a way to become a new person inside by becoming a new person outside.” Just as Hollywood with its numerous Cinderella remakes like She’s All That, Can’t Buy Me Love, Pretty Woman, Miss Congeniality, The Princess Diaries, and She’s Out of Control tells moviegoers that geeks, tomboys, and hookers can become attractive members of society with a little makeup and a costume change, television was telling us we could all do the same.Fashion 90’s Trends – ImgMob Allnewhairstyles
