The 1980s ushered in the first major fashion-focused TV programs: CNN’s Style with Elsa Klensch, Fashion Television, and MTV’s House of Style. Fashion Television host Jeanne Beker recalls only two TV crews backstage at the shows when her program launched in 1985: hers and CNN’s. “Elsa was very no-nonsense it was about hemlines, shade of beige unless you really cared about clothes, it probably went over your head,” says Beker. “We were the only crew doing in-depth designer profiles and covering parties. Now there are countless crews backstage.” The past fifteen years have seen another crop of fashioncentered shows. Some have focused on voyeuristic views of catwalk shows and designers; others have had more of a do-it-yourself angle, including House of Style, the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards, Fashion File, the Learning Channel’s A Makeover Story, Fashionably Loud, Mission Makeover, Fashion Emergency, Style World, Model, Fashion Classic, Model TV, Videofashion!, The Look for Less, the offerings on the Style Network, and Full Frontal Fashion on New York’s Metro Channel, which broadcasts twenty-four-hour coverage of New York Fashion Week. The shows have spanned various demographics, from the diehard fashion fan who craves couture to the average consumer who wants to see more affordable styles. “Fashion has become a real spectator sport,” says Beker. And it’s not all in vain. Viewers do typically get a little more than entertainment out of the shows. “The people that watch our show some just watch for T&A but they’re learning by osmosis,” says Beker. “People are a lot more fashion conscious. Look at men: finally men are starting to shop for themselves. That was unheard of in the eighties.”
