Since natural’ and organic’ aren’t necessarily regulated terms in this industry, read the ingredients list prior to purchase. Natural’ isn’t necessarily the best when it comes to skincare. In fact, some natural products can actually hurt your skin. A lot of natural ingredients like peppermint and lavender can actually irritate. Natural is also only about where the ingredient came from, not how effective it is.
THE DERMAL NURSE: Companies can, and often do, slap the word organic’ on products that are full of synthetic chemicals. In many cases, they have organic ingredients listed at the top of the label, followed by the typical synthetic chemicals found in conventional products.
The best way to assert a product’s organic status is to look for a certification label from Australian Certified Organic (ACO). Words like natural’ and organic’ can veil toxic skin lighteners, such as hydroquinone, synthetic fragrances and artificial colours. The thing is, natural’ products are not able to use efficacious ingredients such as synthesised peptides, vitamins. Compare any age-defying organic skincare product to one that uses a blend of natural and laboratory-derived ingredients and there is no comparison.
