BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH JOINS THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE – AS ITS WEIRDEST HERO YET
EVIN FEIGE, GRAND Poobah of Marvel Studios, remembers the first time he met Benedict Cumberbatch. It was a workaday meeting, the sort he schedules with dozens of directors and actors every year, to discuss potential opportunities. “After he left,” recalls Feige of Cumberbatch, “Stephen Broussard (executive producer) and I looked at each other and said, ‘I think Doctor Strange was just here.'”
A few years later, Cumberbatch has managed to find time in his hectic schedule to star as former doctor Stephen Strange. “He’s an arrogant neurosurgeon in Manhattan, living a very opulent lifestyle,” explains Feige. “He gets into a horrible car accident and his hands, the tools by which he can do amazing surgeries, are mangled and destroyed. That starts his downward path, and that’s why Benedict is such a great choice you can go to the highest heights and lowest lows with him and he won’t lose you.”
A brilliant but arrogant bloke with a goatee has his life changed by a near-death experience and becomes
a superhero… So far, so Tony Stark. But Feige is convinced that Doctor Strange marks a new chapter for Marvel. “It couldn’t be any more different than any of the films that have come before it,” he says. It will also be a seriously weird chapter, as the troubled Strange travels to Kathmandu to find a cure for his hands, and winds up taking a crash course in the mystic arts that leads him to become Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme, the last line of defence against inter-dimensional beasties. “There are more things that lurk in shadows in this movie, perhaps, than our other movies,” says Feige.
Although horror veteran Scott Derrickson is directing, don’t expect it to be Marvel’s darkest movie yet. “We see glimpses of something called the Dark Dimension,” says Feige, “but if you were to open a Doctor Strange comic drawn by Steve Ditko, you would see the Dark Dimension is, in fact, very colourful in an extremely psychedelic way. Those are the things we’re not shying away from.” ch
