Slick and sexy, and super for moisturizing the lips, glosses come in every variety from low sheen to high gloss. Wear with lip pencil, on its own or over a matt lipstick for a lighter effect. Lip gloss looks great, but transfers easily, can feel ‘jammy’ and is not long-lasting.
These do just that. For those who prefer minimal coverage these lipsticks leave the wearer with a hint of colour, rather like the look your mouth has when you have just been eating berries.
Smooth, youthful and suitable for all ages, these usually contain silicones to help them glide on easily.
These are long-lasting, as they do not slide around like creamy colours. However, a matt lipstick can be drying and can accentuate lines in older lips. Be sure to moisturize your lips if this is your lipstick choice, and be aware that matt lipsticks make the lips look smaller.
These will stay the course as long as you do, but will have to be removed with the cosmetic equivalent of paint stripper.
Ultra-light lipsticks, which usually have a slight sheen -these will not rub off as quickly as traditional lip gloss.
Frosted colours look fabulous, but can be ageing on anyone over 35. Their light-reflecting properties create a fuller, moist appearance.
Long used by make-up artists, lip palettes enable you to create your own spectrum of lip shades (or draw upon a brand’s ready-made selection). Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown do the ultimate compacts.
