Decca resurrected Argo, which during the LP era had been home to all manner of specialist material including modern music; WEA revived the fearlessly eclectic and innovative Nonesuch label. BMG, for its part, launched Catalyst, a label with a diverse roster which ranged from crowd-pleasers such as Evelyn Glennie to more improbable items such as Alvin Curran’s Songs and Views from the Magnetic Garden, first released independently some 20 years earlier.
Venture, Argo and Catalyst were subsequently all industry casualties, but now the last of these has risen, phoenix-like, from its own ashes, armed with a fresh series identity and available at mid-price. The label has a wider brief in that it now incorporates relevant reissues taken from elsewhere in the RCA and Conifer catalogues, while at the same time maintaining a strong identity. Ten releases are available now, more are scheduled and, quite frankly, anyone who cares at all for modern music should plan a shopping trip at once.
